What is Marketing?
All
organizations perform two basic functions: They produce a good or
service, and they market it. Production and marketing are the essence
of economic life in any society. Marketing is the performance of business
activities that direct the flow of goods and services from the producer
to the consumer or user.
If
we want to know what a business is, one has to start with its purpose.
There is one valid definition of business purpose: to create a customer.
But how do we "create a customer".
Essentially,
"creating" a customer means identifying needs in the marketplace,
finding out which needs the business can profitably serve, and developing
an offering to convert potential buyers into customers. How this is
done:
- Identify customer
needs
- Design goods
and/or services that meet those needs
- Communicate information
about those goods and/or services to prospective buyers
- Make the goods
and/or services available at times and places that meet the customers'
needs
- Price goods and/or
services to reflect costs, competition, and customer's ability to
buy
- Provide the necessary
service and follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction after the purchase
